I can still hear Annie Laura Gunn’s warm and familiar greeting “Hey, Babe!” I can see her all decked out in her Sunday best with matching eye-catching hats, shoes and purses. Memories surround me with images of Sister Gunn in her usher’s uniform, her choir robe, her white kitchen uniform and apron, or busy overseeing a special program for the Pastor’s Aide.

One outstanding recollection is Sister Gunn’s cooking skills in the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church kitchen. She expertly served up flavorful fried chicken, Swedish meatballs, spaghetti, macaroni ‘n cheese, iced tea and other examples of delicious home cookin’. The food was so tasty that all conversations stopped once a plate of this goodness was in hand. As the old expression goes, “Sister Gunn put her foot in it”; i.e. the food was lip-smackin’ good!

I realize that Sister Gunn’s physical presence is no longer with us, but the memories of her vibrant, warm but spicy personality will endure forever. Her relationship with Hopewell’s former late pastor, Rev. Dr. Clarence L. Crews, was as though they were related by blood. He was her pastor, friend and brother. That close relationship with Sister Gunn extended to me as Clarence’s wife. Sister Gunn will always have a place in my heart.

Annie Laura Gunn is asleep in Jesus. And as her loved ones, your sorrow as my sorrow, is not without hope.
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him”
(I Thessalonians 4:14 KJV).

Be faithful and remember as God has provided this day of separation, He has also promised a day of reunion. Then we shall see those we have loved and lost never to part again.

May God be with you,
(Mrs.) Varee Crews
