Obituary for Gregory Charles Holmes

Gregory Charles Holmes was born October 7, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio to Othello and Roosevelt Holmes.

Greg attended Frank Cody High School in Detroit, MI. where he chose to play the Tuba instead of Basketball, although he was heavily recruited by the coaches to join the team. With his 6’6” stature, and deep Bass voice, you could hear him coming, before you saw him. Greg loved music and was a self-taught musician. His musical talents afforded him many opportunities to work with well-known super stars such as The Temptations, Dennis Edwards, Martha Reeves and others, throughout his lifetime. He was also a Bass singer and performed with several local musical groups, including The Monuments.

Greg loved his family and cherished his mother deeply. He was The Provider, The Protector, and The Enforcer. Although, he never married, nor had any kids of his own, he respected women and shared his Father-like qualities with every child that came into his life. He had many special nieces, nephews and cousins and was fondly referred to as “Big Bro” by many.

In 1969, he joined the U.S. Marines and proudly served our country until 1973. In September 1975, he joined General Motors Corporation's Cadillac Division. He later joined the Detroit Hamtramck Assembly team, commonly known as the DHAM Family, and was a member of Local 22. With 43.3 years of service, Greg was well known throughout the entire plant that stretches 1 mile long in each direction. Although he was well revered, and respected by all, most would admit they only knew him as “Holmes” or “BodyShop Holmes”. Described as a “Coach of Men”, “Greg was always respectful to others and demanded respect to women in the workplace. Like the Marine he was, he took pride in his work and gave his best at all times. He was always the same.” Normally that would be quite intimidating, except he was a “Gentle Giant, always smiling and fun-loving. He was an all-around Super Star that loved and helped everyone. Greg represented the Holmes Family name well”.

Greg leaves to cherish his memories: his sister Pamela (Calvin) Crosson of Westland, MI, loving companion Jean Key & Family, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special cousin, Jeffrey Ware, of Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by parents Othello and Roosevelt Holmes, brothers Robert Earl Martin and Mark Anthony Holmes, grandparents Henry Sr. and Epsie Gibson, uncles Solomon and Henry Gibson Jr. and aunt Elizabeth Ware.
